PENTECOST MAY 11, 2008

Dear Members and Friends of the OLP Parish Family,

So many of the things we learned about life were communicated to us, one way or another, by our parents. Consider the following “Momisms” that contributed to our education.
Mom taught us about STAMINA:
“You just sit there until that broccoli is gone!”
Mom taught us about PATIENCE:
“Sure, you can do that, when you’re 21 and don’t live here anymore!”
Mom taught us about ANTICIPATION:
“You just wait until we get home!”
Mom taught us about poetic JUSTICE:
“One day you’ll have kids of your own and they’ll turn out just like you!”
Mom taught us about LOGIC:
“Because I said so, that’s why!”
Mom taught us about CONTORTIONISM:
“Will you just look at that dirt on the back of your neck!”
Mom taught us about GENETICS:
“You’re just like your father!”
Mom taught us about TIME TRAVEL:
“If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to send you into the middle of next week!”
Mom taught us about RELIGION:
“You’d better just pray that stain comes out of the carpet!”
Yes, mom taught us these and so many other things as well, but most importantly she taught us LOVE:
“You know that whatever you do or whatever happens, I’ll love you and be there for you always!”

Today, friends, we celebrate both the great Solemnity of Pentecost as well as Mother’s Day. Is it just a coincidence that we celebrate both on the same Sunday? Well, “it is what it is,” as we sometimes say. However, even though it may just be the way our calendar dates intersect, don’t you think that celebrating both is somewhat providential as well? After all, what do we celebrate on Pentecost? We celebrate the great outpouring of the Holy Spirit! We are encouraged to “wear red,” or colors that represent the tongues of fire that came to rest on the disciples. We consider how the Holy Spirit filled these disciples with the gifts that they needed to leave the upper room and boldly proclaim the Good News! And we remember, this is not just the celebration of some past event! This is the celebration of the Holy Spirit alive and well and continuing to work in our midst as Jesus’ disciples today!

Also, this second Sunday in May, we remember our moms and the great gift they have been to us, as well as the particular gifts they have generously shared. We remember all the women of our community and the models of stewardship that so many of them have been for the church. We say “Praise the Holy Spirit,” for these generous women who have not only worked so hard to share values with and raise a family, but who have also done so much to nourish the family of faith.

Fr. Bill, Fr. Dan, Deacon Tony and I always feel so privileged to hear such wonderful testimonies about these women! So often, sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, will offer “words of remembrance” as part of the Mass of the Resurrection. And what do they and others remember? They recall the generous sharing of gifts! They recall the personal sacrifices that were made for the members of the family. They recall the generous offering of time, talent and personal resources for the church. It may have been back in the days of the church festivals and fish fries. It might have been in the cafeteria kitchen or the religious ed classroom. It might have been early morning Mass and then cleaning the church, or late evening planning for a forthcoming event with the rosary to follow. Whenever and wherever, today we celebrate the Holy Spirit who has been so active and evident in the generous service of these moms, these women. We thank God for the gift of the Spirit in the hearts of all who offer back the love that God first bestowed upon them. And we pray: “Come Holy Spirit! Fill our hearts! Make us joyful disciples! Witnesses to the Gospel today!”

Many thanks to the members of our Pro-Life Organization who are offering carnations today. May their good work be rewarded with an increased respect for all life and, particularly, the protection of the life of our unborn sisters and brothers. Present a carnation at our Blessed Mother Shrine in remembrance, give mom a carnation with love and thanksgiving, let yet another woman know she is thought of and appreciated! For all you have taught us, for the generous sharing of gifts, we are grateful!
Happy Pentecost! Happy Mother’s Day to all!
Father Tom

Way To Go!

Congratulations to Alyssa Strzalka who has been accepted into the National Opera Summer Institute for Young Singers in Washington, DC (music director: Placido Domingo). Alyssa is one of only 30 students in the country who are accepted into this program. She has also been accepted to the NY State Summer School of the Arts at SUNY Fredonia and was the principal oboe for the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra at their recent concert. Back home, here at Our Lady of Peace, Alyssa is one of our cantors. What an honor.

We are proud of you, Alyssa!!!

Music Ministry opportunity for all teens!

SpiritSong, a music ministry at OLP, is specifically for teens in grades 6 through young adult. We welcome both vocalists and instrumentalists. SpiritSong leads the congregation in song at two Masses a month. Our liturgical music combines traditional and contemporary Christian songs. Our goal is to provide music that is uplifting and inspirational and we also strive to teach our members about the importance of music in the liturgy, the special role of cantors, and how to sing as a group while leading the congregation in song. SpiritSong rehearses in the church on Wednesdays from 5:30pm-6:30pm (excluding the first Wednesday of each month). Please consider bringing your voices and instruments to join us in this rewarding ministry. You are welcome to attend any scheduled practice and “try us out”, no commitment necessary! SpiritSong will be leading the congregation in song Sunday, May 18th, at the 10:30am Mass and Saturday, May 31st, at the 5:00pm Mass.
